The 1948 Triumph Roadster Coupé 2000, registration number 10-80-MA, belongs to Joaquim Correia das Neves Cavaco, who bought it in 1990, in London, at a Classic Car World exhibition.
The car has been in his possession for 33 years.
When he bought the car from the previous owner, it registered 65,000 miles (about 105,000 km). Ever since it has been in his name, it has covered 2,000 miles (about 3,200 km) in races and some Island Tours. The car is still in its original state and has never undergone any restoration process.
Currently, there are one or two more like it in Portugal. In the United Kingdom there are many examples, including a very dynamic car club.
The 2000 Triumph Roadster Coupé was designed by Frank Callaby, who worked for Sir John Black's Standard Triumph. A curious aspect can be found in the trunk, which opens and lifts a windscreen (2nd windshield) and 2 “dicky seats”, also known as mother-in-law stools.
This vehicle has already been featured in the Classic Cars magazine, dated August 1990, and ‘Auto Clássico’, in February 1992.
The only significant update to the Roadster production took place in September 1948, to the 1949 models, when the 2088cc Vanguard engine, transmission and rear axle were installed. With the larger engine, the four-speed gearbox was replaced with a three-speed unit, although now with synchronization in the lower gear.
Aside from minor modifications to the assembly points, the chassis, suspension and steering have remained unchanged. This later version of the Roadster was given the model designation 20TR.
In tests, the changes resulted in the top speed being marginally increased to 77 mph (124 km/h), but the 0-60 mph time was much better at 27.9 seconds.
The car was never manufactured in large numbers and was built mostly by hand. 2,501 examples of the 1800 and 2,000 of the larger engine version were made. Production ended in October 1949.
