It was purchased in Lisbon, when he was studying medicine, more than 40 years ago. It was in a chicken coop, facing backwards. He brought it to Madeira, but it was very poorly repaired. Only when he had it in his homeland did he carry out a general rebuild, which even involved installing an original engine from the British model. The Triumph TR2 is a sports car produced by the Standard Motor Company in the United Kingdom between 1953 and 1955. It was most commonly available in an open two-seater version. Standard's Triumph Roadster was outdated and underpowered. Company boss Sir John Black's attempt to acquire the Morgan Motor Company failed, but he still wanted an affordable sports car. Then a two-seater prototype was built on a shortened version of the Standard Eight chassis powered by the Standard Vanguard's 2 engine. The resulting Triumph 20TS prototype was revealed at the 1952 London Motor Show. Black asked BRM development engineer and test pilot Ken Richardson to evaluate the 20TS. After declaring it a "death trap", a project was undertaken to improve the design. A year later, the TR2 was released. It had a better appearance, a simple ladder-type chassis, and a longer body. In 1955, the more powerful TR3 was introduced with a redesigned grille and a GT package that included a factory hardtop. A total of 8,636 TR2s were produced. It was replaced by the TR3 in 1955. The TR2 has a standard 1,991 cc (121.5 cubic inch) wet-jacketed inline-four engine from the Vanguard, fitted with two H4-type SU carburettors and tuned to increase its output to 90 hp (67 kW). The body is mounted on a separate chassis with independent suspension, with coil springs at the front and a live axle with leaf springs at the rear. Wire or disc wheels can be supplied. The transmission is a 4-speed manual with optional top gear overdrive. Lockheed drum brakes are installed everywhere. As a side note, TR stands for Triumph Roadster.
