This particular model carries with it a personal history that dates back to 1980. It was around this time that the love for the Vespa arose, after a conversation with his brother Sérgio, who already owned several. This moment ended up sparking a lasting interest, giving rise to a small collection – this one being the first of many.
Produced between 1960 and 1966 by Piaggio, the Vespa 150 VBB succeeded the VBA, from 1959, bringing with it several innovations. Equipped with a 145.5 cc engine and rotary valve system, it used a 2% fuel mixture, which was more efficient and economical. One of the great novelties was the introduction of a 4-speed gearbox — until then exclusive to sports models, such as the GS 150.
The design also marked a new era. More compact and elegant, with rounded lines and narrower panels, the VBB became the basis for the "Large Frame" models that followed. Details such as the polished aluminum trim, the central rubber mat, and the iconic "Vespa 150" logo in cursive, reinforce its distinctive character.
The engine was redesigned, with the carburetor positioned above the crankcase, facilitating the access and improving performance. SIEM headlights with chrome rims, 8-inch wheels, and individual seats – with the option of a bench seat – complete the machine designed to be practical, robust, and elegant.
From 1963 onwards, the VBB2 version introduced changes to the chassis, including a flat-cut rear for direct license plate attachment. In terms of colour, the first series was in metallic blue colour, while the second adopted a medium blue.
This model was also produced, under license, in other countries, such as by Douglas in the United Kingdom and Bajaj Auto in India, which proves its international success.
Today, the Vespa 150 VBB is an increasingly rare model. Over the years, many have been modified, losing their originality. Finding an example faithful to factory specifications is a true privilege – and preserving its authenticity is keeping a part of history alive.
This Vespa represents more than just a classic: it's the beginning of a passion that spans generations.
