Founded by Jean Daninos, the brand stood out for its combination of French refinement with American-made engines, becoming a symbol of sophistication and performance.
In fact, Jean Daninos was also involved in the development of the UMM project, contributing to its technical supervision through his association with the French car manufacturer Peugeot.
This car, which was first registered in Portugal upon delivery to the brand’s importer Guérin, was for sale for a few years. Mr. Manuel Barbosa, one of the car’s owners and a national powerboat champion and European runner-up, explains that this HK 500 was used to tow the trailer carrying competition boats to European events.
I purchased it in 2006, with the bodywork and engine being subsequently restored by Mr. José Cunha (with some help from me), here in Madeira.
The purchase of this car was very important to me, not only because of the model’s historical and automotive value, but also due to my French heritage, which has always made me particularly fond of French car brands.
I first learnt about this vehicle the very year it came on the market, and after a few setbacks and negotiations, I finally managed to complete the purchase.
As far as I am aware, this is the only vehicle of this model, originally registered in Portugal, that is still roadworthy and in perfect working condition, a fact that further enhances its rarity, exclusivity and importance to the country’s automotive heritage.
