Famel surprised the market by presenting the Foguetão:
The JLO three-speed German engine is known for its robustness. The model was developed under the guidance of José Diogo Quadros, Famel’s technical director, and stood out as well in competitions and regularity trials, helping to build the brand’s reputation.
The JLO engine was produced in Germany and was considered advanced for a 50 cc moped at the time.
Its main features were:
High reliability and ease of maintenance; good hill-climbing ability for its era. Today it holds historical value among Portuguese collectors. The Famel Foguetão with an original ILO (JLO) engine is considered one of the most important models in Famel’s history. It is rarer than many later models equipped with Zündapp engines and marked the beginning of the brand’s establishment in the domestic market.
The moped was restored in Madeira as faithfully as possible to the original and was awarded the prize for the best restored Portuguese motorcycle.
