It is, by far, the motorcycle model that has been in continuous production for the longest time in the world. Harley-Davidson’s intention was to directly compete with the racing models produced by their rival Triumph on the racetracks. The chassis was extremely modern for 1957, weighing just over 200 kg, which at the time, and especially for Harley-Davidson, meant an exceptionally lightweight construction.
The chassis and braking system were a bit overloaded by the 55 hp engine, but this did not bother buyers, who were predominantly young sports enthusiasts.
Harley-Davidson combined the engine and gearbox into a single unit, which showed effective and offered additional firmness to the frame, as well as a very compact design that is still used today.
Because the engine was bolted directly to the frame, its vibrations were transmitted to the rider, but this was considered, by users, a particular characteristic of the model which helped transform it into a myth. The 1958 Harley-Davidson Sportster, especially the XLCH model is known for its performance characteristics and sporty style.
New to fame, musician Elvis Presley chose a KH Pepper Red as his first Harley- Davidson V-Twin and was photographed riding it for the magazine cover “The Enthusiast”.
The XL series was a hit in the American dealerships in 1957. During its launch, the XL was considered a hot rod motorcycle and the first American muscle bike, and today it remains the most popular machine in its category. The Sportster was as impressive as expected, winning on roads and streets.
Due to the several models and accessories, it is said that no two Sportsters are ever the same as when they leave the factory.
Despite the extraordinary success obtained by the launch of the Sportster XL 883, Harley-Davidson did not cease production of the K model and continued having great success in the racetracks through the KR model.
Equipped with an 883cc V-Twin engine, options for magneto or battery ignition, and 8-inch drum brakes, the XLCH model stood out for its more aggressive look, with cut-back mudguards and a staggered dual exhaust without silencers.
This motorcycle was notably used by the Police traffic brigade in Portugal and by escorts for state figures and visiting dignitaries until the 1970s. It also formed part of a small fleet assigned to the customs guard. It was precisely from this small contingent that Luiz Pinto Machado acquired his bike in the early 1980s, keeping it in his collection for over 40 years. It is one of the rare examples still existing in Portugal and Europe.
